A Call to Fire Prosecutors in Botched Stevens Trial

WASHINGTON — Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska called on Friday for the summary dismissal of two federal prosecutors who came under particular criticism in a report about the botched ethics trial of Senator Ted Stevens, while lawyers for the two complained that their clients had been smeared.

Joseph W. Bottini, a federal prosecutor in Anchorage, is accused of deliberately withholding evidence in the Stevens trial.
Ms. Murkowski said that the late Mr. Stevens, a fellow Alaska Republican, would not have lost his Senate seat in the 2008 election if not for their misconduct.
